General pre-order questions

- Can I buy a hosting plan without a domain name from Hostean?
Yes - you can purchase any hosting plan you wish without a domain name from us. If you are transferring an existing domain name to us for hosting, this is free of charge.

- Can I expand my storage with additional space?
Yes, at any given time you wish - you may either pay for extra space or bandwidth, or simply upgrade to another hosting package altogether at no extra charge. Go to the Prices section to read more.

- Do I own a domain after registering it with Hostean?
Yes you do. The domain will become your property after it has been registered. Please allow 24 to 48 hours until the new domain is updated in worldwide 'whois' DNS databases.

- What is the lifetime of my domain?
You can keep a domain name as long as you would like, just as long as you renew the registration when the current period is up. For example, if you recently registered your domain for 3 years, you need to renew the registration in 2007. Hostean will send you a renewal reminder in time prior to the expiration.

- What type of connection do Hostean servers have to the Internet?
Our servers are located on a 155 mbit/s OC3 fiber optic link connected to several of the Internet's main backbones, providing ultra low response times and high speed.

- What are your rules and guidelines for allowed content on the server?
This is detailed in our Terms and Conditions.

Getting started

- Do I need to know Linux to manage my web site?
No you do not. This is why we provide the control panel, as well as several very easy to use protocols to edit your page. Such as FTP, Frontpage, and the HTML editor in the cpanel.

- How do I put my new website onto the server?
This can be done in several ways. If you have Microsoft Frontpage or Macromedia Dreamweaver, uploading everything from your website is done in a few simple steps. You can also use any FTP program (there are many good freeware or shareware FTP programs out there, such as CuteFTP) to upload files with.

- How do I get the main page of my website to load?
Name your index file (the one that will be your main page) to either "index.php" or "index.htm" and place it in the public_html directory.

- What are some FTP programs you recommend?
If you don't have access to Dreamweaver or Microsoft Frontpage, some good FTP tools are: CuteFTP and WS-FTP. They can be found here.

- How do I modify the files in the cgi-sys directory?
You cannot modify the files in the cgi-sys directory. These files are served from a central location from each machine. You may only edit files within
your ftp directory structure.

- How do I create an online store?
There are a few different shopping carts provided in the Control Panel with which you can create online stores.

- How do I create my own '404 Not found' error page?
This can be done quickly and easily using the error editor in the online
control panel.

- I want to add databases to my site - where do I start?
The most efficient and readily available database system is through MySQL. You may add databases as well as administrate them directly through your control panel's MySQL Tools section.

Website management

- How do I manage my website and server space?
To log into your controlpanel, simply type http://yourdomain.com/cpanel/login in your browsers address bar. (Replace the .com extension in the example with your extension). Use the name and password included in the email previously sent to you.

- How can I access databases from my web pages?
The easiest way to do this by far is through PHP4 and it's MySQL module. We suggest you research this at the PHP Homepage. We also have DBI/MySQL support installed into perl on all machines.

- How do I access my website statistics?
Statistics can be viewed in real-time from your online control panel. Log files are processed once every 48 hours.

- Where can I find my raw server log files?
You may download your raw log file from the Site Stats sections of your control panel.

- Where can I find perl, sendmail, and other programs on the server?
The correct paths are as follows:
sendmail - /usr/sbin/sendmail
perl - /usr/bin/perl
